Autódromo José Carlos Pace is a challenging anti-clockwise circuit featuring significant elevation changes and a mix of technical infield sections and fast, flowing corners. Managing tyre wear and car stability is paramount for consistent performance.

Setup Focus

  • Stiff suspension for stability in high-speed corners and responsiveness.
  • Aerodynamics optimized for a balance between downforce in the technical sections and straight-line speed.
  • Brake bias adjusted slightly rearward to help rotation into the tighter corners, but not so much as to cause instability.

Corner Analysis

3 corners
1

Senna S

Complex of two left turns followed by a right turn

Gear Downshift to 2nd or 3rd gear for the initial lefts, potentially 3rd for the right.

Senna S

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Brake firmly before the first left, aiming for a late apex. Use the kerbs on the exit of the first left to carry momentum. The second left requires a slight adjustment, focusing on a smooth transition to the right-hander. The right-hander is crucial for exit speed onto the main straight.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on the first left, mid-apex on the second left, and a late apex on the right to maximize acceleration.

2

Descida do Lago / Laranjinha / Ferradura

Fast, flowing sequence of left and right turns

Gear Mostly 4th and 5th gear, downshifting to 3rd for Ferradura.

Descida do Lago / Laranjinha / Ferradura

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

This section tests car stability and driver commitment. Maintain a consistent line through Descida do Lago and Laranjinha, using the slight elevation changes to your advantage. The tightening Ferradura requires precise braking and a smooth steering input to avoid running wide.

Apex Strategy

Focus on carrying speed through the fast sections. For Ferradura, a mid-apex is generally best to set up for the following straight.

3

Junção

Tight right-hander leading into a left-hander

Gear Downshift to 2nd or 3rd gear for Junção.

Junção

VIDEO COMING SOON

Technique

Brake hard into Junção, aiming for a late apex to straighten the car as much as possible for the exit. The subsequent left-hander is relatively quick and requires a smooth transition to maintain momentum.

Apex Strategy

Late apex on Junção is key for a good exit. Aim for a mid-apex on the following left.

Critical Risks

Common mistakes at this circuit

  • Exiting Senna S too wide can lead to a spin or loss of significant time.
  • The fast, flowing nature of the middle sector can catch out drivers who are not committed or whose cars are unstable.
  • Braking too late into Junção will compromise your exit speed onto the pit straight.
